Dell ships first 20 MHz 386sx-based machine
On Monday March 19, Dell Computer introduced a desktop PC based on Intel's
20-MHz 80386SX. This is the first 20-MHz 386SX system on the market, providing
approximately 25 percent higher performance than typical 16 MHz 386SX-based
systems.
The Dell 320LX is priced at $2,899, and this includes 1 MB RAM, 40 MB hard
disk, a VGA monochrome monitor, and seven ISA expansion slots. Thus, the 320LX
is priced about $650 more than a similar configuration of the 16 MHz SX Dell
system, and $600 less than the 20-MHz 80386-based Dell system.
We think that this announcement signals greater competition in the $1,500 to
$3,500 price range. Street prices of color 20-MHz 386SX machines with hard
disks will probably approach $3,000. Street prices of color 16-MHz 386SX
machines with hard disks are now dropping below $2,000. These aggressively
priced systems, when combined with Windows 3.0, will be important competitors
throughout 1990.
IMPACT ON APPLE: As we’ve said before, it’s vital that customers consider the
full range of what a computer can do, and not just judge it by price and
superficial interface. The new 386sx systems will make that even more
important.
